2024 September Student of the Month - Briseis Rusnacko

By Bruce Karnick - Hastings Journal

The Hastings Rotary Club recognizes Hastings High School seniors who exemplify Rotary’s motto of ‘Service Above Self’ as a way to reward and foster these ideals. The Student of the Month also builds mutually rewarding relationships between school administration, staff, students, parents and the Rotary members. Each school year, eight senior students are nominated by their teachers to earn the Rotary Student of the Month. The selected student, their nominators, a school board member, school superintendent Dr. Tammy Champa and the recipient’s family are invited to a Rotary meeting for breakfast and recognition.

Septembers Student of the Month is Briseis Rusnacko.

Rusnacko was nominated by Ms. Jaeger, Ms. Mahlen, Ms. Cardell and Mr. Casperson.

Here is what they had to say:

I have been waiting years for Briseis Rusnacko to become a senior so that I can nominate her for the honor of Rotary Student of the Month. I have known Briseis since her sophomore year when she transferred to HHS and joined my advisory, and this year she is a student in my Introduction to Literature course through the University of Minnesota. I know Briseis well, and I am positive that her character and leadership make her the ideal recipient of this honor.

Briseis is one of the most engaged and considerate students I’ve known in my 26+ years of teaching. She has an open mind and a cooperative spirit, which make her a delight to be around. Briseis looks for opportunities to welcome students in, and she encourages students to explore new ideas with her. Her concern for others is authentic, and she is skilled at finding ways to use her abilities to help others. For the past three years, she has been a leader in my advisory. While some advisories have leaders who drive competition, Briseis is a leader who fosters empathy. If a classmate is having a bad day, she checks in with them the next day. If she knows I have a doctor’s appointment on Friday afternoon, Monday morning she’s there asking me how I’m doing. It’s no surprise that she chooses to be active in Student Council and Link Crew, she was a Youth Ambassador, and this year she is one of our district’s first student representatives on the school board. Briseis is known throughout the school, even by teachers who have never had her in class, simply by the roles she plays in making our school climate the best it can be. We are only a few weeks into Briseis’ senior year, and I am already impressed with her contributions in College Literature. Briseis not only participates honestly and thoughtfully, but she also asks judgment-free questions as a way to understand and include others. Her classmates and I appreciate and admire her positive attitude and enthusiasm, which are contagious. I look forward to experiencing the lasting impact Briseis will have on HHS and ISD 200. Ms. Jaeger

Briseis joined choir when she came to HHS in her sophomore year and had never been in a choir before, so this was totally new to her. It did not take her long to start finding her place among the returning students and she was and still is always engaged in learning during the class. Briseis consistently walks in with a smile on her face, asks how I am doing and truly cares about the answer. She is kind to everyone she meets and includes students that tend to pull away due to insecurity or shyness. She is truly the poster student of the Rotary four-way test! Ms. Mahlen

Agree! Briseis is very deserving of this honor for all of the reasons stated by Ms. Jaeger and Ms. Mahlen. Ms. Cardell

Briseis is an excellent choice for this recognition. Briseis has been an outstanding student in all three Ceramics she has taken. She is motivated, creative, attentive, she is great in discussions and critiques and always puts her best foot forward. Now that she is my student aide her best attributes shine brightly. Briseis is one of the most selfless students I have encountered. She generously helps other students and teachers in any way she can, often without being asked and always with a smile. Briseis has a deep well of kindness and positivity and she shines that light on everyone around her. Mr. Casperson

Congratulations, Briseis Rusnacko!

2024 November Student of the Month - Delaina Kurtz

By Bruce Karnick - Hastings Journal

The Hastings Area Rotary Club and Hastings High School are proud to announce that senior Delaina Kurtz has been selected as the November 2024 recipient of the prestigious Hastings Rotary “Student of the Month” Award. This honor is presented to students who exemplify Rotary’s guiding principle, “Service Above Self,” recognizing their dedication to community service, academic excellence, and leadership.

Delaina was nominated by Ms. Ashley Hoffman and Ms. Kallie Jonas, who highlighted her remarkable achievements and contributions to the school and the community.

A Stellar Student and Leader
Ms. Hoffman, who has known Delaina since her sophomore year, praised her academic prowess and involvement in extracurricular activities. "Delaina excels academically and is a natural community-builder," she said. "She has been instrumental in ensuring that events at Hastings High School are inclusive and welcoming for all students."

Delaina’s involvement in student organizations is extensive. She has taken leadership roles in Student Council, Spanish Club, and the Spanish Honor Society, where she has helped plan and lead events for large groups of Global Language students. Ms. Hoffman also noted Delaina’s impressive ability to present cultural information with confidence and clarity, reflecting her dedication to fostering understanding and inclusivity.

In addition to her school activities, Delaina balances her time working at Coborn’s and babysitting for local families. "She is a well-rounded, humble individual who deserves this recognition wholeheartedly," Hoffman added.

Embodiment of Raider Spirit
Ms. Jonas echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Delaina’s work ethic, creativity, and leadership. "Delaina doesn’t back down from challenges and is always open to new perspectives," she said. "Her creativity shines in our Student Council planning sessions, where she consistently develops innovative solutions to ensure the success of events."

As a Senior Student Council Officer, Delaina has shown dedication and reliability, helping to organize events that embody the positive Raider spirit. In addition to her leadership roles, she is also an active member of the National Honor Society and contributes to the Writing Center at Hastings High School.

Both nominators agree that Delaina’s inclusivity, determination, and leadership set her apart as an outstanding student and role model within the Hastings High School community.

Building Connections
The Hastings Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” program strengthens relationships between the Rotary, school staff, students, and families while encouraging the ideals of service, leadership, and academic excellence. Delaina’s selection for this award underscores her commitment to these values and her positive impact on the Hastings community.

Congratulations, Delaina Kurtz, on this well-deserved recognition!

2025 January Student of the Month - Gavyn Hanson

By Bruce Karnick - Hastings Journal

Hastings High School senior Gavyn Hanson has been honored as the January 2025 recipient of the prestigious Hastings Rotary “Student of the Month” Award, an accolade that recognizes students who exemplify the Rotary Club’s motto of “Service Above Self.”

The award, jointly presented by the Hastings Rotary Club and Hastings High School, celebrates outstanding student leaders who not only excel academically and athletically but also contribute positively to the community. Hanson was nominated by teachers Ms. Benson and Mr. Haneberg, both of whom highlighted her exceptional character, leadership, and resilience.

“Gavyn is a phenomenal young woman and an amazing support person for fellow students,” said Mr. Haneberg. “Despite tearing her ACL twice — an injury that sidelined her from junior and senior seasons in soccer and wrestling — she has turned adversity into an opportunity by stepping up as a team manager and beginning to coach our girls’ wrestling program. Her leadership and character are evident in every facet of her high school career.”

In addition to her athletic pursuits, Hanson is a standout scholar. With a 3.982 GPA, she tackles a challenging course load that includes AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, and several college-level classes in subjects ranging from economics to Spanish. Her academic achievements are complemented by her active participation in extracurricular activities: she is a Link Crew Leader, a member of both the Spanish Honor Society and the National Honor Society, and a committed FCA huddle leader.

Ms. Benson also praised Hanson’s influence on the school community. “Gavyn leads by example and empowers others to be their best,” she said. “Whether she’s connecting with freshmen as a Link Crew Leader or diving into collaborative learning in AP Chemistry, her positive attitude and willingness to serve truly set her apart.”

Beyond the classroom and sports fields, Hanson manages her time by working with a local property management company. In her free time, she enjoys snowboarding, walking her dog, and spending weekends at the cabin with friends. Though still undecided about her college plans, she is considering a major in an engineering field.

Hanson’s blend of academic prowess, athletic determination, and community spirit embodies the very essence of the “Service Above Self” motto, inspiring her peers and setting a high standard for student leadership in Hastings.

2025 February Student of the Month - Julia Rotty

By Bruce Karnick - Hastings Journal

The Hastings Rotary Club has named Hastings High School senior Julia Rotty as its February 2025 Student of the Month, recognizing her commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service to her school and community.

Rotty was nominated by Hastings High School teacher Marissa Welch, who described her as an exemplary student and a role model among her peers. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA while balancing numerous extracurricular activities, Rotty embodies the Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self.”

As a captain of the Hastings girls tennis team, a Riverside show choir participant, and a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, Rotty has made a lasting impact at Hastings High School. She is also involved in Peer Tutors, Link Crew, and the school’s Athleadership group, which promotes leadership through athletics.

Beyond her school involvement, Rotty works as a dietary aide at Hastings Senior Health and Living, demonstrating her commitment to service outside the classroom. Welch praised Rotty’s willingness to help whenever needed, noting that she has assisted teachers in organizing offices and supplies to benefit students, set up and staffed the girl’s tennis table at the school’s activities fair, and volunteered at Rivertown Live’s cheese curd booth to represent her team and serve the community.

“Julia is soft-spoken but sure and determined, incredibly kind-hearted, and easygoing,” Welch said. “She has strong values that she demonstrates on a regular basis, and I believe she is especially deserving of this recognition.”

The Student of the Month award is based on a student’s involvement in service-related groups, leadership among peers, dedication to success for themselves and others, and adherence to the Rotary’s Four-Way Test: truth, fairness, goodwill, and benefit to all concerned.

Rotty and her parents were honored at the Hastings Rotary Club meeting on Thursday, March 13, at 7:20 a.m. at the 2nd Street Depot where she was introduced to Rotary members and received an award recognizing her accomplishments.

2025 March Student of the Month - Ollie Pfeiffer

By Bruce Karnick - Hastings Journal

The Hastings Area Rotary Club shined a spotlight on exceptional youth at their April 17 meeting, held bright and early at the 2nd Street Depot. This week’s focus was the club’s cherished tradition: honoring Hastings High School’s Student of the Month. And this time, the applause, and a very large ceremonial check, went to senior Ollie Pfeiffer.

Introduced by teacher Ms. Steen, who submitted the nomination, Ollie was recognized for her academic excellence, dedication to others, and passion for communication, creativity, and community.

“Ollie is an incredible student,” Steen wrote in her heartfelt nomination. “She’s consistently acknowledged by teachers for her academic skill and her desire to help others.” Steen highlighted Ollie’s 3.8 GPA, her AP coursework, and her strong presence in the classroom, in the Writing Center, and on the stage in HHS theater productions.

“She’s a talented writer,” Steen continued, “and has a deep care for storytelling that shines not only in her writing but in the way she shows up in all of her classes and relationships.”

When Ollie took the mic, her words showed that passion in real time.

A Voice with Purpose

“I'm incredibly proud to be up here,” Ollie began, addressing the room with a mix of humility and poise that belied her age. “This award not only encompasses my passions that I’ve strived to accomplish throughout my high school career but the connections and community I've made along the way.”

Ollie’s speech emphasized the role of community in her life, especially her theater family. She spoke about the importance of upperclassmen setting the tone for inclusivity and high standards, saying, “We are the ones they look up to.” Creating a welcoming environment in the theater program has been a mission of hers, and she’s proud of the legacy she leaves behind.

Ollie also thanked her English and Spanish teachers, noting how their encouragement shaped her growth. “Communication, both written and spoken, is something I hold to the utmost importance in my life,” she said, crediting mentors like Mr. Willette, Ms. Gapinski, and Mr. Dugstad for helping her sharpen those skills.

Creative Drive and Real-World Experience

Outside of class, Ollie has poured her energy into projects like the school’s Writing Center, where she helps students at all levels refine their writing. She’s also a key contributor to Riders in Action, a student journalism initiative that has produced over a dozen segments this year, spotlighting everything from school events to community service.

As for her creative pursuits? When she’s not anchoring or editing, Ollie is world-building, literally. “I play Dungeons and Dragons,” she said with a grin during the Q&A portion. “I write my own stories for campaigns, and I have a bunch of story ideas backed up in my Google Docs.”

This passion for storytelling has already extended beyond high school. Through Stillwater’s StoryArk, she’s mentored younger writers during summer programs, helping them find their voices while nurturing her own.

A Bright Future

Ollie plans to attend Hamline University in St. Paul this fall, exploring a future in education, communications, or theater. Her dream? Possibly becoming an English teacher or pursuing acting.

“I especially see myself in the world of education,” she shared. “Many of my role models have been my teachers. Their voices not only create change, they are the change.”

Several Rotary members, many with ties to education and the arts, chimed in during the meeting. One mentioned the George Vane International Travel Program at Hamline, encouraging Ollie to explore the opportunities it offers. Another praised her poise and clarity, noting her talent for public speaking, a skill she’s honed through both theater and her recent college public speaking class.

She also tackled a question about AI in the classroom, sharing how Writing Center mentors are being trained to recognize AI-generated content. “You can kind of tell the difference,” she said, describing how they handle suspected cases by collaborating with teachers.

Cheers, Laughter, and a Little Bathroom Talk

The meeting wasn’t all formalities. True to Rotary tradition, a few lighthearted questions rounded out the morning, like the ever popular “How’s the bedroom?” Ollie and her parents laughed, admitting the bedroom was surprisingly clean, though the bathroom was “iffy.”

Ollie’s parents, clearly beaming with pride, sat nearby along with her teachers and mentors. “She did all the work herself,” her father said. “It’s been truly entertaining to watch her perform and write.”

Ms. Steen, who nominated her, spoke with emotion about Ollie’s character. “She doesn’t always see how amazing she is,” she said. “But she’s always thinking of others.”

A Student Worth Celebrating

As the meeting drew to a close, the club presented Ollie with a symbolic check and a plaque, followed by group photos and more well-deserved congratulations.

In an era where students face mounting pressures, Ollie Pfeiffer’s story is a reminder of what genuine passion, hard work, and kindness can achieve. Her voice is clear, her message is strong, and her future is wide open.

Congratulations, Ollie, from your Rotary community and beyond.

2025 April Student of the Month - Audrey McNamara

By Bruce Karnick - Hastings Journal

At a recent breakfast hosted by the Hastings Area Rotary Club, senior Audrey McNamara was honored as the Rotary Student of the Month. The morning served as both recognition and celebration, as friends, family, teachers, and community members gathered to reflect on the leadership, service, and spirit that define Audrey’s time at Hastings High School.

As Rotary Club member Andrew Burdick opened the presentation, he captured the tone of the morning simply and powerfully.

“Some students are inspired by outside catalysts,” he said, “but Audrey is her own catalyst.” That insight became clear as her many accomplishments and qualities were shared by those who have watched her grow, perform, and lead with consistent kindness and quiet determination.

Audrey was joined at the breakfast by her parents, grandparents from both sides, and influential mentors including her student council advisor, Ms. Jonas. In a heartfelt show of support, each person echoed the same theme. Audrey is not just active, she is driven. Not just involved, but impactful. She has used her high school years to learn, stretch, and shine in ways that reflect both humility and ambition.

Audrey’s nomination came from English teacher Ms. Jaeger, who had the privilege of teaching her in both honors and college-level literature classes.

“Audrey began as a student who wanted to blend in,” she wrote, “but she has grown into someone who embraces her passions without worrying about outside judgment. She genuinely loves learning, helping others, and being involved.”

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Audrey has made the most of her high school years. She’s a student council officer, a writing center coach, a Link Crew leader, and a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She plays four instruments and has been part of multiple musical groups including wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band, and show choir.

One of her boldest decisions was joining the marching band in her senior year. Many students might hesitate to take on a new, time-intensive commitment that late in high school. Audrey jumped in headfirst and ended up performing an impressive solo during the band’s dynamic show. Her courage paid off, both musically and personally.

“I was scared to join as a freshman,” Audrey admitted during her speech. “But doing it this year helped me discover new things about myself and find another community of friends.”

Another highlight of her high school music experience came last year when the Hastings wind ensemble was invited to perform at the Minnesota Music Educators Association conference.

“That concert was unforgettable,” Audrey said. “Even our elementary music teachers drove up to the Cities to see us perform. The support meant everything.”

Audrey’s passion for music extends beyond school walls. During the past holiday season, she organized and performed in three recitals at local assisted living centers. She selected the music, scheduled the performances herself, and delivered joy through each note. One resident told her that her music made his day, especially since he could not see family during the holidays.

“One woman asked to hold my instrument,” Audrey recalled. “She said it was the first time she had ever heard live music. That moment stuck with me.” Audrey plans to repeat those performances this coming winter.

Outside of music, Audrey is deeply involved in community service. She has volunteered for years at TLC, the local pregnancy resource center where her mother serves on the board.

“I help with ads and run events,” she said. “One of my favorite parts is staffing the booth at Rivertown Days. I create games for the kids who stop by, and I love hearing their laughter and seeing their smiles.”

Looking ahead, Audrey plans to attend the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, where she will double major in music and psychology with the goal of becoming a music therapist.

“I believe in the healing power of music,” she said. “I want to help others find joy and purpose through it.”

Her parents also had the opportunity to speak at the event, and their pride was unmistakable. “She went into high school a bit timid, a wallflower,” said her father. “But she’s grown into this brave, confident person who knows who she is. She has grit, she has drive, and I can’t wait to see where that takes her.” Her mother laughed warmly while recounting Audrey’s ever-growing list of activities. “Right after finishing marching band, she joined the distance track team,” she said. “She never takes a break. She does everything with excellence.”

Ms. Jonas, her student council advisor, spoke glowingly of Audrey’s leadership.

“She’s made my job so much easier. She’s always willing to help and brings amazing ideas. More importantly, she makes every student in student council feel seen and welcome. We’re really going to miss her.”

Faculty members and school board representatives shared their admiration as well.

“She’s not just a student,” one teacher noted. “She’s a light in the building every day. Audrey doesn’t even realize how many people she inspires just by being herself.”

Near the end of the event, Audrey answered questions from Rotary members. She confirmed that clarinet is her favorite instrument to listen to, while flute is her favorite to play. She also shared that one of her favorite school memories was helping organize prom through student council.

“Seeing it all come together and experiencing that moment with my friends was unforgettable,” she said.

As her senior year winds down, Audrey is preparing to spend her summer working at Caribou Coffee, UPS, and babysitting. She’ll also continue her music lessons to prepare for college ensembles.

“And most importantly,” she said, “I want to make the most of my time with my family. They’re really incredible.”

When presented with her plaque and ceremonial Rotary check, Audrey accepted it with the same grace and gratitude that has come to define her presence in the Hastings community.

“I’m honored to be Rotary Student of the Month,” she said. “This is a title I’ll carry with pride.”

Her family, teachers, and mentors all agreed: if the Rotary Club’s four-way test is about truth, fairness, goodwill, and benefit to all, Audrey McNamara is a shining example.
